Understanding Your Spanish Residency Renewal Timeline

Once you have made Spain your home, maintaining your legal residency is an ongoing responsibility. The Spanish residency system works in stages:

Y1
Year 1 — Initial Visa Period

Your Type D long-stay visa covers the first year. Within 30 days of arrival you apply for your TIE (residency card). By the end of Year 1 you must apply for your first renewal.

Y1–Y3
First Renewal — 2-Year Residency Permit

After Year 1, your TIE is renewed for 2 years. You must demonstrate continued compliance with your visa conditions (income, health insurance, etc.).

Y3–Y5
Second Renewal — Further 2-Year Permit

A second 2-year renewal takes you to 5 years of continuous legal residence.

Y5
Long-Term Permanent Residency (Residencia de Larga Duración)

After 5 continuous years, you are eligible for permanent residency. This does not expire and grants the right to live and work in Spain indefinitely without visa conditions.

Y10
Spanish Citizenship Eligibility

Most UK nationals become eligible for Spanish citizenship after 10 years of continuous legal residence, subject to language and cultural knowledge requirements.

Documents Needed for Renewal

Renewal requirements vary slightly depending on your original visa type, but typically include:

Core Documents

  • Current TIE card (original + copy)
  • Valid passport (original + copy)
  • Completed renewal form (EX-01)
  • Padrón municipal certificate
  • Tasa fee payment (Model 790)

Financial & Supporting Documents

  • 3–6 months bank statements
  • Income evidence (payslips, invoices, pension)
  • Private health insurance (if still required)
  • Social Security contribution record (if applicable)

All foreign-language documents submitted for residency renewal must be translated by a Spain MFA-accredited sworn translator — the same requirement as the initial application. See our guide to certified document translation for Spain visas and residency for a full document checklist and pricing.

Don't miss your deadline. You should begin the renewal process at least 60 days before your current permit expires. Late renewals can result in a gap in legal status, which complicates future renewals and may affect the continuity count towards permanent residency.

Applying for Permanent Residency in Spain

After five continuous years of legal residence, you can apply for long-term permanent residency (Residencia de Larga Duración). Key points:

  • You must not have been absent from Spain for more than 6 months in any single year, or 10 months total over the 5 years
  • The permanent residency card is valid for 5 years and automatically renewable — there are no income conditions after this point
  • You have the right to work in any capacity (employed, self-employed, or director)
  • Full access to Spain's public healthcare and social security system

By the time you reach your first or second renewal, you will be a Spanish tax resident. Our Spain income tax guide for UK expats covers IRPF rates, Modelo 100, Modelo 720, and the key deadlines for annual tax returns — as well as whether you may still be eligible for the Beckham Law special tax regime.

The Path to Spanish Citizenship

Most UK nationals can apply for Spanish citizenship after 10 years of continuous legal residence. Requirements include:

  • 10 years continuous legal residence in Spain
  • Spanish language test — DELE A2 level certificate
  • Cultural knowledge test — CCSE (Spanish Constitution and Sociocultural Realities)
  • Clean criminal record (both UK and Spanish)
  • Renunciation of UK citizenship (Spain generally does not permit dual nationality for non-EU nationals, with some exceptions)
