The complete guide for UK nationals applying from the UK
What Is the Digital Nomad Visa?
Spain's Digital Nomad Visa (Visado para Teletrabajadores de Carácter Internacional) was introduced under the 2022 Startup Act. It lets UK and US nationals live legally in Spain while working remotely for companies or clients based outside Spain.
It grants an initial 1-year visa (or up to 3-year residence authorisation if applying from within Spain), renewable for up to 5 years total, with a pathway to permanent residency after 5 years and Spanish citizenship after 10.
Eligibility Requirements
You must demonstrate a minimum monthly income of approximately €2,849 (200% of Spain's 2026 minimum wage). For dependents: +75% SMI for the first, +25% per additional. Income can be from employment, freelance contracts, or a combination.
At least 80% of your income must come from non-Spanish companies or clients. You may work for up to one Spanish company, provided they account for no more than 20% of your total income.
If employed, you must have been with your current employer for at least 3 months before applying. Freelancers must demonstrate 3+ months of consistent client relationships.
You need valid private health insurance that covers the full duration of your stay in Spain. You must also provide a criminal record certificate from the UK (issued within the last 3 months) with no serious convictions.
